Geehi - Marples Electric Launch
19' x 7'7"

|
|
Almost from the day I started Duck Flat Wooden Boats back in the early 80’s, Dick Adamson was in my life. He had an amazing career as an aviator, Australian and British fighter pilot, wild (and very hazardous) times with Nauru Airlines, was a pioneering Tiger Airlines captain, (the really hairy branch of Cathay Pacific) flying Jumbos in and out of the then fairly lawless China.
I think Dick had every copy of Australian Amateur Boat Builder in his library at Raratonga. He bought boat stuff from me sometimes, but mostly kind of hung around when he wasn’t flying, and then dropped in more frequently after he hung up his epaulettes. He was one of the inaugural band of wooden boat nuts brave enough to make the first Wooden Boats Over America trip that we ran back in 2000. That it was such a success was due as much as anything to the spirit of the group, and a large part of that was the spirit of Dick and his wonderful Cook Island’s wife Tai’i, for whom adversity was welcomed as a friend, and good times were insisted upon.
In that spirit he bought Geehi. Geehi (after one of the early Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric villages) was built around 2002ish? for the Solar Boat Company in Sydney, and I believe her to be the first electric, or solar electric boat ever to cross from Adelaide to Stansbury under her own power.
She did it with ease. Dick had read of her exploits in AABB over the years, and finally bought her from the Solar Boat Company in ? to cruise around Port Phillip, travel up the river under the bridges for nights at Southbank and; using the trailer, to be part of the growing solar boating activities across this country. Especially, Geehi was to be a joint project between Dick and his very loved daughters, Kirsten and Justine. |
|
Geehi is a significant boat. She draws crowds wherever she goes.
She is practical too. Geehi is capable of carrying 8 or more people, with their baggage, easily. She has a range on one charge without overhead panels of at least twenty nautical miles, thirty plus with two big panels on her roof.
In Dick’s custody, Geehi got new state of the art batteries, new wiring to match, and a very easily set up canopy top.
Sadly, Dick is no longer with us.
As a result, Kirsten has asked me, on behalf of the family to sell Geehi.
She comes with a good trailer, and she is extremely well equipped and maintained. Geehi was designed especially for electric propulsion by John Marples. Her construction is (Constant Camber) very low maintenance marine ply and epoxy composite. The asking price of $22,000 for Geehi, is much less than half that she cost to build, and about a third of what it would cost to replace her today.
And nothing can buy her history.

Nigel's Houseboat is For Sale

|
|
Admiral' 17.5 meters x 7m beam x .6m draft. Moored Murray Bridge, South Australia.
Alloy hulls. 75 HP Outboard. 240 volt generator. Excellent fit out and condition. Ready to go again as a comfortable floating, mobile home.
Nigel and his family have been living on Admiral for several years now, cruising the River Murray in South Australia.
Their watery home is now for sale, because Nigel has got carpentry work in Port Lincoln and they'd like to buy a house there..
'Admiral' has been built in survey in 1985 for self drive hire, but because in recent times the family was living aboard it has not needed to have the boat for chartering work, and the survey lapsed. Nigel tells me that 'Admiral' could easily be got back into survey.
The guest cabin was originally two cabins, and the structure is in place to allow that to be easily changed back if this was desired.
It may be that Nigel could be convinced to make the change if the new owner wished for that to happen, as part of the sale arrangements.
Sleeps up to ten. Fully furnished. TV, Stereo, Two Way Radio, Washing Machine, Dryer, New Gas Stove, Micro Wave Oven, Sundry Kitchen Appliances, Gas Heating, R/C Air Con, Furniture etc. |

NIS 29 'Look Sharp'

This boat was built over several years in NSW by Andrew Taylor around ten years ago. He put in to it a level of care, planning and workmanship that most professionals would envy.
The hull has been built from Gaboon Ply and sealed inside and out with Bote Cote epoxy resin for long life, low maintenance and great strength. The fresh water storage, head, galley, soft furnishings, hatches, solar panels, radios, safety equipment and ground tackle are all of high order. I was present at various stages of the construction and can attest to the superb quality of the build. |
|
The motor is a well maintained late model 10 hp Yamaha 4stroke with the high thrust prop and battery charging, perfect for this boat.
I have sailed this boat on the Derwent, Storm Bay and around to Lewisham recently, and was delighted with the performance and condition of the boat. Simply, it is like new.
All the Norwalk Islands Sharpies have a deserved reputation for easy handling, performance and seakeeping, and this boat is right up there.
Can it be this good? Nothing is perfect, and all boats are work in progress. You could make the reefing and some aspects of the running gear simpler for off shore single handed sailing, and some tuning of the sails batten pockets, would make the otherwise 'like new' sails perfect. But in the meantime, you'll have a low maintenance sailing home, that can sneak into creeks with the board up, comfortably sit out the tide on mud flats and moorings no one else wants and with shifting scenery whenever you want it. |
|
It's a tragedy for Malcolm, his crook back does not permit this much excitement any more. On the other hand it's really a gift for someone who appreciates craftsmanship and and a very versatile and capable boat.
A new one to this standard would not leave a lot of change just for the materials and equipment.
